June 4 was our first day in the Masai Mara, named for the Maasi people and the “mara” which means savanna. The Masai Mara is the part of the Serengeti landform that is in Kenya. “Serengeti” is the Swahili word for “endless plains,” an apt description. This is a stunningly beautiful and wild part of our planet, and was a deep reminder that humans are just one small part of the natural world. And, to the animals that live here, we really don’t matter much at all.
