I tend not to take many pictures of people- especially not strangers that I see on our travels. It feels intrusive to me. However, I do recognize that without some evidence of human life, my trip to Africa could look like I went to a very fancy zoo. So, I am sharing some photos of people and places to make it a bit more real. And, I realize I should probably take more photos like this in subsequent trips. I’m still learning, after all these years! There is a lot here– take your time as you browse the galleries below.
On May 30, we stayed fairly close to Nairobi. We visited Sandstorm, an Artists collaborative, and saw artisans making beautiful bags, beadwork, leatherwork, and carvings. After Sandstorm we went to the Kiambethu Tea Farm, one of the earliest tea farms in Kenya.
We visited two different tribal villages- the Samburu and the Maasai. Here are some images from those visits After the gallery, I added two videos.

On our way back to Nairobi to catch our flight to Zanzibar, we stopped at the Ubuntu School. A group of people founded this school to provide education and services to kids with disabilities in Kenya. It is supported by donations and the sale of hand made jewelry, bags, etc. that are made on site. We did not meet any of the students- summer vacation!
Stone Town, Zanzibar: We did not spend much time in Zanzibar, but Stone Town was an incredibly vibrant and varied city. It has a tragic history related to the East African Slave Trade which is evident throughout the city. It also has a very crowded and cool market area, a beautiful coastline, and it is home to the Freddie Mercury museum (no photos, sorry). The narrow streets and markets remind me of Marrakesh, with the red sandstones of Morocco replaced with white stucco.
